Acne and treatment has many facets. With acne scar treatment there are several treatments depending on the age of the scar and the type.

Three Types of Acne Scars

Boxcar scars are round to oval that have sharp vertical edges. These can be treated with skin resurfacing. Deep boxcar scars require full-thickness treatment styles.

Rolling scars give the skin a rolling or undulating appearance. They are treated by breaking up the subcutaneous fibrous bands.

If needed, there can also be a skin graft replacement in addition to the punch excision. Punch elevation is another surgical method used on deep scars. Subcutaneous incision, known as Subcision, breaks up the fibrous bands causing rolling scars. Using local anesthesia, a beveled needle is inserted. Bruising occurs and fades after one week.

Laser resurfacing is another treatment. Carbon dioxide and erbium lasers can be used. It burns the top layers of skin, then the skin heals itself with newer appearing skin. The laser is the most popular treatment.
